How Much Does a Wedding Cost?
Words by Utterly Printable
Generally speaking, weddings are expensive. Most people will only spend more than the cost of their wedding on buying a house. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule and people manage a very gorgeous budget wedding. But the average costs are high. To find out exactly how much it costs we turned to our friends at hitched.co.uk who carried out an annual UK wedding survey in 2019. This is what they discovered.
For 2019 the average cost of a wedding was £31,974. We agree that this sounds like a lot, but when you look at it, it was actually £299 down on the average cost for 2018. The cost does not include any spending on beauty items which for 2018 came in at £612. Overall, the amount has gone up as in 2017 The figure was nearer £26,000. So just where is all this money going? Well the top 10 things we spend money on for a wedding are as follows.
Average cost of a wedding:
£5406 on the venue
£3887 on food
£1313 on the wedding dress
£1587 on drink
£1005 on the entertainment and music
£1135 on photography
£1000 on the video
£2419 on the wedding and engagement rings
£4645 on a honeymoon
£1135 on a mini moon
So, as you can see it all starts to rack up pretty quickly. When you factor in things like the cost of the hen party which on average is £427 and stag-do’s coming in at a whopping £552 you can start to see how it all adds up. You also notice that we are not just talking about the day itself but things leading up to the event. Engagement parties tend to set you back £900, and bridesmaids dresses in the region of £199. Getting the men dressed is no cheaper, on average a groom suit costs £452. This does not factor in things like wedding stationery, hiring vehicles, and many other things that make up a big day.
Of course, you then have to thank your bridesmaids and on average £190 spent on gifts, and when you factor in presents for the groomsmen and your parents and his parents you can see how money starts to spiral.
