5 Graceful Poems to Include in Your Funeral Order of Service Utterly Printable

A funeral order of service is often something cherished from what is always a solemn day. It is both a guide for the proceedings and something friends and family like to take away and keep, to remember the final journey of the deceased. It can bring comfort in times of grief and therefore it is lovely to be able to include a poem that sums up the feelings we have for our loved ones when they leave us.

Knowing which poem to choose can be difficult especially as those closest are usually the ones planning the funeral, so emotions are running high. To make it a little easier for you we have gathered some of the most beautiful funeral poetry for you to consider including in your funeral order of service template:

Poem 1:

If I should die before the rest of you
Break not a flower nor inscribe a stone
Nor, when I’m gone, speak in a Sunday voice,
But be the usual selves that I have known.
Weep if you must
Parting is hell.
But life goes on.
So sing as well.

by Joyce Grenfell

Poem 2:

When we lose a loved one
Our world just falls apart
We think that we can’t carry on
With this broken heart
Everything is different now
You’re upset and you’re annoyed
Your world it seems is shattered
There’s such an awful void
There’s got to be a reason
And we have to understand
God made us and at any time
Hell reach down for our hand
There might not be a warning
We won’t know where or when
The only thing were certain of
Is well meet them once again.

Poem 3:

And I’ve got to understand
You must release the ones you love
And let go of their hand.
I try and cope the best I can
But I’m missing you so much
If I could only see you
And once more feel your touch.
Yes, you’ve just walked on ahead of me
Don’t worry I’ll be fine
But now and then I swear I feel
Your hand slip into mine.

by Joyce Grenfell

Poem 4:

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there.
I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn’s rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there.
I did not die.

by Mary Frye

Poem 5:

God saw you getting tired
And a cure was not to be
So he put His arms around you
And whispered, “Come to me.”

With tearful eyes we watched you
As you slowly slipped away
And though we loved you dearly
We couldn’t make you stay.

Your golden heart stopped beating
Your tired hands put to rest
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best.
